Mealtop – Korean desserts at La Mer
Have you ever tried the Korean dessert Bingsoo? If your answer was no, well, I have a good news for you. You won’t have to go all the way to South Korea to try this, because Mealtop has opened up shop at the newest foodie spot in Dubai – La Mer.
Before Mealtop, I had never known what Bingsoo is, leave alone trying it. So my excitement to try this ‘meal’ was right at the ‘top’.
Bingsoo
Bingsoo, or Korean ice cream as they like to call it, is basically a shaved ice dessert topped with milk syrup and red beans. What we tried was the classic Milk Bingsoo, but if you’re feeling creative, you can opt for different flavors like fruit, yogurt, coffee and even matcha green tea. While the milk-soaked ice was fab, the red beans have an acquired taste. I would rather opt for bingsoo without red beans, and with fruits instead.
Softie
Next on our list was the mixed flavor softie ice creams. While the white milk flavor was similar to your regular vanilla softie, the brown one was a surprisingly sweet milk tea flavor, which was just like the local karak. It’s important to note that this is not their attempt at localizing their flavors, but coincidentally, the milk tea in South Korea tastes the same as a Chai back home or a Karak at your next door cafeteria. We tried this ice cream in their normal cup form as well as in their soon to release Korean cone. I loved the cone dough – it was just like eating a pancake!
Waffle
After all those ice creams, we decided to give their waffles a try. Very simple and elegant, the icing sugar dusted waffles were served with a side of fresh fruits and a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream.
A special thanks to Mc Collins Media and Mealtop for the lovely treat on a late Friday afternoon.

Mealtop is a great place for cooling off with some different desserts, while enjoying the beauty of La Mer. The outdoor terrace looks gorgeous during the day. In terms of food, the bingsoo with its shaved ice and milk combination is fine, but red beans definitely have an acquired taste. If you’re not up for it, just go for fruits instead. Karak tea lovers will certainly enjoy the milk tea softie.
