Sushi with a Desi Tadka at Moshi

Marrying the momos of Nepal with the sushi in Japan, Moshi has its summer menu dotted with the most creative variety and uniquely common flavors, topped with exceptional presentation and warm hospitality.

Creativity and presentation take on a new high at Moshi. Take this strawberry mojito for example. The perfect addition to a summer menu, this drink not only refreshes you, but also offers a tangy twist. I’m not a fan of strawberries usually, but this cooler managed to light me up (pun intended). The lemony flavor cuts through the sweetness of strawberry.

And incase you still haven’t got it, this drink is served in a light bulb! I know right!

You definitely have to try the strawberry mojito at Moshi this summer. Ask them to serve it in the light bulb. And don’t forget to tell them you saw it on True To Taste!

At a point where other sushi joints would stop experimenting, Moshi brings in its Desi twist.

Behind those earthy bamboo trunks, lies a creative genius: Rahul Sajnani. Brought up by vegetarian parents, Rahul decided it was time to give this quintessentially seafood cuisine a subcontinent makeover. Combining childhood memories with some of his favorite flavors and reworking the myths that refrained people from trying out sushi, he came up with a summer menu for Moshi featuring a sushi variety that’s completely unheard of.

Pictured here (left to right): Cheesy chips Oman – a Dubai childhood classic, Flamin’ Cheetos chicken – for all that nostalgia, Dhokla maki – a vegetarian delight for Gujjus and everyone else alike, Volcano – their own version of dynamite shrimps, and Zaatar Labneh – yet another regional favorite.

Flamin’ hot is what this out-of-the-box sushi aims to offer. Featuring a tender chicken centre, the roll is topped with crunchy Cheetos giving this dish an eclectic appeal.

Every table at Moshi is served with a piece of wasabi and slices of Gari or sushi ginger. While wasabi plays its game of spicing up the soya with its strong flavor, the pickled Gari makes the perfect palate cleanser.

If you are a Dubai kid, or if you have ever been on a 90’s foodie spree in the Emirates, you would have definitely come across the Chips Oman sandwich.

Moshi gives this childhood favorite its own creative twist by covering it into… That’s right: a sushi!

Served with or without chicken, the Cheesy Chips Oman roll features a creamy cheese heart, wrapped in rice and covered with crushed Chips Oman. These pieces are plated over a drizzle of teriyaki and sriracha sauce, adding that extra spicy kick.

As soon as you bite into this roll, you experience a burst of comforting cheese followed by a spicy crunch which really takes you back to those school days. Who could have thought of this, right?

A must have for Chips Oman lovers, and highly recommended for those wanting to get a feel of Dubai in the 90’s, you can try these out at Moshi this summer. You won’t regret!

Calling all Gujjus and Gujarati food lovers out there! This veggie delight is none other than a Dhokla Maki.

Wrapped in sesame studded sticky rice, sits a scrumptious dhokla piece, garnished with colorful coriander. What’s more, the sweet and tangy tamarind chutney on the plate, encapsulates the entire Gujarati essence!

So all you vegetarians and vegans, come and experience some sushi at Moshi.

There’s no way I can go to a sushi joint and not have shrimps right!

The Volcano roll at Moshi is their own creative take on the ever-so-delicious Dynamite Shrimps. Featuring a tenderly crunchy piece of shrimp wrapped in rice and a piece topping the roll, it is smothered in creamy volcano sauce for that spicy kick.

I would totally recommend these to all shrimp lovers.

Tapping in to the flavors of the Middle East, the Zaatar Labneh maki from Moshi comes with a heart of cucumber and labneh wrapped in soft rice, that’s generously coated with zaatar. The olive makes for a proverbial cherry on top of this beautifully creamy Lebanese sushi variant.

The delightful crunch of broccoli teams up with effortless asparagus nibbles and creamy avocado bites in this Broccoli and Asparagus sushi. The broccoli coated rice and asparagus avocado heart give this variant the perfect garden salad appeal. Topped with a hint of tomato sauce, this light and refreshing sushi makes a great choice for health food lovers.

Cool, creamy and comforting, what’s not to love about this Lotus milkshake? Adding this craze-of-the-phase ingredient to their summer menu, Moshi blends in Lotus biscuits with milk to make this thick shake that offers a heart-warmingly biscuity taste. A taste that can’t really be described in words, it can only be experienced, at Moshi. The Lotus milkshake is presented in a chic retro bottle, and you know I’m a sucker for presentation, so even though I’m not big on milkshakes, this one definitely got brownie points. Oh, and the milkshake is topped with crushed Lotus biscuits, giving it that perfectly presentable finish.

If sushi is the second half, momos comprise the first half of Moshi. Filled with a generous stuffing of edamame and mushrooms, the momos come in a variety of steamed or pan-fried. We love the crafty yellow sesame and deep red chili sauces that add a flavorful kick to these dumplings.

One of the most noteworthy aspects of these Edamame & Mushroom momos is that the stuffing is hearty enough to overcome the doughy taste of the pastry. Moshi has a variety of vegetarian, meat and seafood momos that’s sure to satisfy every palate.

Why should seafood lovers have all the fun? Sushi is for everyone!

The Falafel Nigiri promises an out-of-the-box experience for all those who have been avoiding sushi for its raw ingredients.

Moshi goes one step further in making this an absolute Dubai classic by adding lots of Tahini at the base of the Nigiri and as a side serve dip too. Crunchy falafel make the perfect pair to sticky rice and the creamy tahini gives it a smooth finish.

The love child of Japanese and American cuisine, the Sushi burger at Moshi is set to challenge the norms in a creatively delicious way.

Starting with an all rice bun, this burger sandwiches a crispy chicken patty over an iceberg lettuce. The rice bun is smothered with their spicy and creamy dynamite sauce, and topped with sweet strawberries to cut the spice.

A wow creation, isn’t it? This contemporary version of chicken and rice is quite filling, making this portion good for one person.

I strongly recommend you go to Moshi with your family or a group of friends so you can all try out their entire variety. The sushi roll portions are great, and because everything is rice based, you are bound to feel full pretty quick.

Sweet indulgence, sushi style! The Nutella Maki at Moshi comes with a doughy consistency and a nutella centre that makes it oh-so-delicious. Drizzled with more of the creamy chocolaty nutella, and dusted with sweet icing sugar, these dessert sushi rolls capture the perfect essence of fusion.

No meal is complete without a sweet something at the end, and trust me, this is just what you need.
