Miss Wang – High spirited Asian fusion

Last night we checked out the newest, albeit secret spot in town, which trust me, was quite a treasure hunt to get to. Miss Wang is nothing you would expect, but then that’s what we food aficionados always look out for – experiences that strive to move out of a “run-of-the-mill” stereotype and make a mark with their uniqueness.

Miss Wang impresses first with its location, then with its décor, then with its specially crafted drinks, and of course with its food offerings. By location, I don’t only refer to the mystery it creates within the Majestic Hotel, but the very fact that this hidden gem is located in the heart of the city – in Mankhool.

Take a look at their dim lit interiors, the stage set for a live band and the artistically painted wall. Throughout my evening at this resto-lounge, I kept wondering if the woman in that painting really is Miss Wang. But let’s just say that’s a mystery yet to be solved.

Chow Mein Salad

When asked to choose between salad and soup, I usually prefer the latter. But at Miss Wang, they strongly recommended we try out at least one of their two salad options. And as such Chow Mein Salad happened.

This colorful plate came with a generous portion of purple cabbage strips topped with crispy noodles. But this was just the start. The deeper we delved, the more goodness we found which included veggies like celery, carrots, spring onions and bean sprouts, fruits like orange, cranberries and mandarin, and some crunchy almonds. All this was beautifully drizzled with chow mein vinaigrette making this salad a mix of crunchy and creamy textures, and sweet and sour flavors.

Lychee Waterfall & Old Fashioned

When you are at Miss Wang, drinks can never take a backseat. Here’s our first round which features the bestseller Old Fashioned cocktail in the background and their house favorite mocktail Lychee Waterfall in the front.

These handcrafted drinks fit in perfectly with the restaurant’s industrial urban look. Together they bring out a contemporary appeal which is unique to Miss Wang, and definitely not something you would find at any other neighborhood hotspot.

Crunchy Volcano Shrimps

Here’s my favorite of them all, the Crunchy Volcano Shrimps. These little pieces of rock shrimps come generously coated in their secret signature volcano sauce that perfectly complements the crunchiness with a creamy finish. As much as I loved these, I would have liked them spicier. So maybe next time I’ll put in a request to make them hot!

Now here’s the fun part. Every evening you get to enjoy happy hours at Miss Wang from 6 pm – 9 pm. This not only gets you selected drinks at 50% off, but you can also order 3 dishes priced up to AED 50 on the menu for a total of just AED 99. This means you can save a maximum of AED 50 on food too!
How is this related to the shrimps you ask? Well, these shrimps are priced at 49 (thank God), so you could possibly order all three portions of these and munch your night away!

Hunan Style Chicken Wings

Every time I heard about Miss Wang, there was this one dish that kept popping up in every post. And well, we are suckers for bestsellers and signatures, so it was just out of question to not give these a try.

Enter Hunan Style Chicken Wings. Tossed in sticky hoisin sauce and sesame oil, and dotted with Sichuan pepper, these wings really make you want to go mmmmm…
Although I prefer my wings tossed on buffalo sauce or fried in buttermilk batter, I can see why these are all the rage. And if you are a wings fan, these should get on your list now.

Asian Passion & Fire Starter

In case you were wondering, yes, there was a second round of drinks. And this is what it was!

While I opted for the Asian Passion featuring cucumber and chillies in a chilled mocktail, my plus one went with the handcrafted Fire Starter cocktail, which in my opinion, was everything Pan Asian in a glass. Right from coconut and chilies to ginger and gallangal, this spicy lemongrass cooler was the perfect refresher you would expect to go with your Asian dishes on a summer evening. It was, as the house bartender likes to call it, a cold Thai soup!

Thai Flat Bread

Did you say Thai Pizza? Yes, there is something that comes really close and you can find it at Miss Wang.

The Thai flat bread comes lined with chicken slices and Asian vegetables on a peanut sauce base topped with loads of mozzarella. I must admit, I spent quite sometime taking this shot which could have made this a little stale or hard, but one bite and I knew it was perfect, even after all that time.
Tip: ditch your regular ketchup for this Thai Pizza and dip these pockets in their soy and sweet chilli sauce instead.

Ramen Noodles in Red Curry

That was a lot of chicken in the starters, with a little bit of shrimps too. So for mains, we decided to go veg!
These ramen noodles are not too soupy as you would expect them, but instead come in a thick red curry broth. Coconut milk based, the broth is dotted with pickled mushrooms, the taste of which will surprise you, and the softest fried tofu ever.

My favorites in this dish – coconut milk and tofu.
Order this one if you like a little experimentation every now and then, or you can stick to classics like Pad Thai.

Sorbet

After all those delicious, and obviously filling mains, we decided to keep it simple for desserts. And hence we opted for a simple passion fruit sorbet.

This was quite refreshing for it gave us something sweet to end with, without taking over all those flavors from before or making us feel too guilty. This way we could reminisce over the entire meal for the rest of the evening.
