Social Distancing – Is it possible?

Social Distancing: is it possible?

This urban term has seen overnight fame, with everyone talking about why it is important, how they are implementing it and how they cannot stick to it. Here’s my two, completely unbiased cents on the whole situation.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve obviously heard of COVID-19. This new strain of corona virus has brought the world together in such solidarity that no one else possibly has come close to. Everyone, right from an 8 year old to 80 year old, regardless of which part of the world they come from, their level of education, income, gender, religion, etc. know about the virus and the most basic ways to prevent getting infected from it: washing your hands, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, limiting travel, etc.

When it comes to social distancing, quarantining or self-isolation, this is something that governments across the world are either implementing or urging people to follow in order to flatten the curve. This is to ensure that those infected get enough time to recover while at the same time those who are healthy can prevent themselves from getting infected, ultimately slowing the spread of the vrius. It also gives people time to evaluate if they are suffering from any symptoms, especially if they have just traveled to one of the high risk zones.

Everyone on social media is asking everyone else to stay home, work from home, avoid going out, etc. But I believe there’s a fine line between suggesting something and judging people for not following it. That line is unfortunately being crossed more than often

Everyone’s doing everything they can, but often people don’t have the freedom to do certain things, like work from home or avoid other people.
So if you’re a stay at home person, or someone who has been given the option to work from home, then take it up and stay safe. If you haven’t, try speaking to your manager to discuss how you can work from home and still be productive. Or as the last resort, take extreme care when you step out.

But please please stop judging and demeaning those who can’t do that. You do your bit and they’ll do theirs, and together we’ll flatten the curve.

Peace to all.
x
