Kayo Poke & Sushi | Wasl 51
Wasl 51 has finally opened up and started populating its commercial space with homegrown food outlets. One such place we got to try is Kayo. Offering a very simple, albeit colourful and delicious selection of poke bowls, maki rolls, nigiri, sashimi and more, Kayo makes sure you don’t have to choose between eating sushi or poke bowls again. You can simply have them both!
While we tried one poke bowl and two different sushi rolls, what I loved about this place was the fact that they use very healthy and nutritious ingredients, and there are so many options to suit all dietary preferences, so whether you are a vegetarian or vegan, or even if you simply prefer chicken over seafood, you can pick whatever you like.
I also really liked the idea of make your own poke, allowing you to create a customized bowl according to your taste and mood.
Here’s what we ordered:
Spicy Shrimp Poke Bowl – I loved this one. The juicy shrimps went just right with a filling portion of Japanese white rice as base, along with seaweed, edamame, sweet corn, sundried tomatoes, carrots and caramelized pineapple. And it all came well together with a dash of chilli flakes, and a drizzle of soy sauce and sriracha mayo. I opted for the small one priced AED 55, which is more than enough for one person. But if you are sharing it with more people, or want to order a family size bowl, you can opt for the medium AED 65 or large AED 75 poke bowls.
Smoky Maki – I’ll be honest, I am not a fan of raw fish, so I didn’t really give this one a go, but my friend who loves all kinds of sushi, really liked this crabstick and smoked salmon roll which was combined with flavors of cucumber, avocado, Philadephia cheese and tempura flakes, and very neatly wrapped in more smoked salmon.
Chicken Teriyaki Maki – a chicken sushi! This was a very happy discovery for me, since very few places I know serve chicken inside sushi rolls. Paired with avocado, cucumber, Philadelphia cheese and crabstick, the teriyaki chicken had a good mix of crunchy, creamy and saucy flavors inside. The sesame seed coating on the outside and a drizzle of teriyaki sauce on top made it complete.
