Go Vegan, stay Indian at Spice Klub
A few days back, the veggie spot in Bur Dubai – Spice Klub – got us sampling their chaat among many more delicacies – all from a newly launched Vegan menu. As Indians, we are so used to certain dishes being such an integral part of our everyday lives, we just miss out on the part that most of them are actually totally vegan. Hats off to Spice Klub for curating a Vegan menu with some of their existing bestsellers as well as some dishes that have been slightly tweaked to adapt to the vegan palette.
I always expected vegan food to be dry, tasteless and bland, but after trying out the Indian Vegan dishes at Spice Klub, I can gladly say that I stand corrected. Read on to find out what we tried from their vegan mix. Remember, everything in this post is 100% vegan💯
Test Tube Pani Puri
All you pani puri lovers, this is one chaat which is definitely worth trying over and over again! Did you know pani puri is 100% vegan? A favorite and bestselling item at Spice Klub and a part of their newly launched Vegan menu, the test tube pani puri, as it is commonly known, comes with crispy puris, potato & sprout stuffing, tamarind chutney in a syringe and of course, the spicy water in test tubes.
Coconut Water with Rose Caviar
How could I possibly resist a drink with coconut? And knowing it was a part of their vegan menu, made it all the more special. Chilled slushy coconut water, in its sweetest form is beautifully topped with rose caviar. Adding a tinge of pink to white, this drink is almost from a fairy tale.
Kala Khatta Mojito
No drink can be more quintessentially Indian than Kala Khatta. Fusing this Indian sour-tangy drink with a contemporary mojito style, Spice Klub aces the presentation. The taste is as good as it can get – a little sour, a little tangy and a whole lot refreshing.
Chutney mix
I have always loved the manner in which Spice Klub serves their dips. This chutney mix is my favorite – especially the black chilli pickle and Panchrang vegetable pickle. The other two are raw mango and tamarind.
Hara Bhara Kebab without cheese
Hara Bhara kebab is possibly the last thing I would order off the menu at a regular restaurant. But even at a vegetarian restaurant, I’d rather they had some cheese or paneer. Well, these were vegan, and surprisingly delicious. Made from spinach and lentils, these bright green kebabs almost looked like falafel, although much moist in texture than their counterpart. I loved the crispy spinach (fried in gram flour) garnish!
Shakarkhand Chaat
This is one chaat I have tried before, so I had a benchmark set before this came to our table. But what arrived totally exceeded my expectations. Dressed up in a very stylish fashion, this chaat featured sweet potato discs topped with a mango chutney sphere and tomato chilli caviar. In short – it was a burst of flavor in every bite!
Veg Tawa
When it comes to having a veg gravy, we like all the veggies in there. This veg tawa served right as a comforting, filling main dish that’s got all the goodness of veggies, while at the same time being vegan. Paired with chapati or naan, this tasted good even one day later.
Baingan Bharta without yogurt
Very unique, this is not your regular bharta. While I would like to use the word ‘deconstructed’, this no-yogurt baingan bharta was actually more in a constructed form. With a spicy mix stuffed inside eggplant shells, this dish was more of a starter than a main. Nevertheless I enjoyed it.
Dal Masala Tadka with Corn Peas Pulao
I find nothing as satisfying as a good dal chawal. The dal masala tadka at Spice Klub was fab! Right from the smooth texture to the spicy chilli tempering, this dal is possibly my most preferred vegan dish from all of them out there. Of course, the rice plays an integral part in balancing the dal and the corn peas pulav did just that. Not only did it add a welcoming change from the usual jeera rice, the corn and pea bits added a nice texture to the dal-rice mix.
Vermicelli Kheer cooked in almond milk
Wow! Simply wow. I had never expected a kheer to taste as light and frothy as this one. Made in a vegan style with almond milk, eating this kheer felt almost like eating foam. The sweetness was just right, which made this dessert quite a guilt-free one!
