Maharashtrian culinary treats at Manisha’s Kitchen

Being a Mumbaikar living in Dubai isn’t always enough. Despite of having experienced the best of both metropolitan cities, there are times when all you want is to go back and enjoy the simple joys of home-made Maharashtrian foods.

Manisha’s Kitchen does a great job satisfying those cravings and cooks up a tasty variety of simple yet delicious items that come right from the heart of every Maharashtrian household. Located in a quiet alley behind one of the busiest lanes of Karama/Bur Dubai, Manisha’s kitchen offers food that will take your taste buds on a journey back home.

Poli bhaji – the staple of every Maharashtrian kitchen comprises of Usal Dal (lentils), Choli Bhaji (beans) and hot, fluffy Polis (Roti – bread). I simply love the Polis. For one these soft and tender phulkas are served hot off the tava and they have absolutely no trace of ghee or fats. After a while I lost count of how many Polis I ate (which is certainly not an everyday thing). I actually ended up ordering a couple more in addition to the 4 that came along with the dish.

The Usal Dal laced with a hint of turmeric and spices is served warm and tender. Its part liquid, part solid texture makes it a great choice as a lentil soup. If you intend to share the Poli Bhaji, order a portion of rice to go with the Dal.

The Choli Bhaji is right out of my mom’s kitchen. It is well cooked, spiced with the perfect amount of masala and tastes so fresh, it is as though the beans have just arrived from the farmer’s market.

The Vegetable Pohe strikes the right cord bringing back fond memories of the roadside dhabas on highways serving this hot delicacy in paper plates. Prepared with tons of curry leaves, Manisha’s Kitchen adds its own flavor with a topping of sweet corn. Garnished with a slice of lemon, this rice flakes dish basked in the aromatic turmeric makes a great choice for a late evening snack with a cup of karak chai.

Talking about karak chai, the Sabudana Vadas are certainly a highlight. These sago fritters are often a part of the fasting menu for a lot of Maharashtrians. They combine the right amount of boiled potatoes and peanuts and are fried to perfection. Manisha’s Kitchen serves these with a portion of Coconut chutney and spicy onions, however you can try them with a peanut sauce for a spicy kick. And don’t forget the karak chai!

If you are in for some street styled Mumbai Chat, visit in the evenings. Don’t forget to try out their Kaire Panhe (Mango Cooler) and Kokum Sharbat (Sour Plum Cooler)!

My Visit: 20th January 2015 – Lunch

I would recommend this place for: Lunch, dinner or evening snacks with a family and friends. The restaurant has limited indoor seating and a decent outdoor space. You might have to wait up on weekends.

The occasion: Ideal for a quick grub or for those times when you have that “I want home food” craving.

The food: 5/5 So many items, I want to try them all. Next time I am taking more people with me!

The value: Just great!

1 Sabudana Vada (3 pieces) – AED 10

1 Mix Veg Pohe – AED 7

1 Poli Bhaaji Combo – AED 10

2 Extra Polis – AED 3

Total: AED 30

The ambience: 2/5 Its a typical Maharashtrian joint. Don’t expect any fancies, just great food. Outdoors would be nicer during the winters, but crowded nonetheless.

The Experience: 5/5 Friendly staff, delicious fare and pocket friendly prices. What more do you want!
